Texas Commission Approves Coal Plant Closure and Construction of 1.6 GW of Wind, Storage and Solar

The Public Utility Commission of Texas approved Southwestern Public Service’s plan to close the Tolk coal plant in early 2029 and replace it with projects including 1,100 megawatts of wind power, 322 megawatts of battery storage and 189 megawatts of solar power. Sierra Club says the decision could conserve substantial amounts of Ogallala Basin groundwater and reduce the plant’s emissions, while approval of two peaking gas plants remains in place with cost restrictions.

Solarlap’s Journey Around Australia Reveals the Conditions for Charging an Electric Vehicle with Solar Power

Andrew Mangano completed a journey around Australia in a Tesla Model 3 Long Range over 42 days, relying on solar-linked charging sites whenever possible. The experience shows that the success of long electric-vehicle journeys depends largely on planning, charger reliability, and the vehicle’s range capacity—not solely on the availability of solar power.

High-Density Mounting System Enables Construction of an 11-Megawatt Solar Plant on Limited Land

Cultivate Power used a mounting system developed by Planted Solar to build the Bowes Solar project on an irregular 22-acre site in Elgin, Illinois, despite the presence of power lines, railway tracks, and a wetland. The design reduces the land requirement for community solar projects to about two acres per megawatt-peak, enabling the use of land that had previously been difficult to develop.

Report: Expansion of AI Data Centers Drives NV Energy to Increase Gas Plans in Nevada

Sierra Club gave NV Energy subsidiary Sierra Pacific Power a D, its worst result since the organization began its assessment, after the company increased its plans to add more than 2.7 gigawatts of gas capacity by 2035 amid expected growth in demand from artificial intelligence data centers. The report warns that the expansion could undermine renewable energy goals and shift infrastructure costs to other consumers.
