Microsoft announced that the new Saudi Arabia East data center region will become available to customers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia starting in November 2026, providing government and private-sector organizations with the option to host eligible data and workloads within the Kingdom, with low-latency access to cloud computing and artificial intelligence services.
The region is located in the Eastern Province and consists of three Azure Availability Zones. According to the company’s announcement, this design aims to provide local data residency, security levels suitable for organizations, and high availability, alongside infrastructure that supports entities requiring operational resilience and local data hosting.
What Will Change in Practice?
The move comes at a time when Microsoft says Saudi organizations are shifting from testing artificial intelligence technologies to using them more broadly in daily operations. Making cloud infrastructure available within the Kingdom would enable more workloads to be moved to a local environment, particularly in sectors that consider data security, response time, and resilience to be essential requirements.
However, the availability announcement does not currently specify the list of services that will be available from day one, pricing details, or the scope of eligible workloads. Therefore, each organization’s benefit will remain dependent on its regulatory and technical requirements and on the services that will actually be available within the region.
Economic Estimates and Skills Programs
Microsoft based its figures on a study prepared by IDC and sponsored by the company, which expects Microsoft, its partners, and its customers using its cloud technologies to generate approximately $44 billion in new revenue for the Saudi economy between 2027 and 2030. The study estimates that the Saudi Arabia East region will contribute about 13.4% of this value and that the Microsoft cloud technology ecosystem will support the creation of approximately 100,000 new jobs during the same period.
The company says it has so far helped 1.6 million people in Saudi Arabia acquire digital and artificial intelligence skills, and is targeting three million people by 2030. The initiatives include students, teachers, women, and professionals, in cooperation with government entities and partners in the digital ecosystem.
A Cloud Region Within a Broader Ecosystem
The announced investments are not limited to the data center. The Microsoft Innovation Hub is scheduled to launch in Saudi Arabia next November to help organizations turn technology ideas into applications through workshops and hands-on experiments. The company also announced the establishment of the AI Arabia Center of Excellence in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Skills Council, and Gulf Intelligence.
Microsoft is also cooperating with entities including HUMAIN to develop artificial intelligence solutions suited to the Saudi market, update data environments, and prepare workloads for these applications.
