Google announced a new line of laptops called Googlebook, which it says was designed to work as a direct extension of Android phones rather than as a separate device. Prices start at $899, and preorders have begun through the Google Store, Best Buy, and select retailers, while the device will reach stores in the United States on October 4, 2026.
The company presents Googlebook as a new category built on the Android stack, with desktop foundations derived from ChromeOS. Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo will manufacture the first lineup of devices, which use aluminum, magnesium-alloy, or carbon-fiber chassis, touchscreens with resolutions of up to 2.8K OLED, glass touchpads, and backlit keyboards.
Hardware Focused on Local Performance
The devices include processors from Intel and Qualcomm, along with dedicated neural processing units capable of more than 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Google says battery life may reach 14 hours, while the external Glowbar feature returns with illumination at startup, a battery-level indicator, and animations when interacting with Gemini.
Direct Integration with an Android Phone
When signing in, phone settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and messages can be transferred to Googlebook with end-to-end encryption. The Continue On feature allows users to continue a task from their phone on the computer, while the Files app displays phone files and photos for searching and opening without the need to send attachments to oneself.
Cast My Apps allows users to stream phone apps and interact with them in a window on the desktop; Google cites examples such as using food-delivery apps or accessing temporary codes in the Messages app.
Gemini Tools for Users and Developers
Googlebook includes built-in artificial intelligence tools such as Magic Pointer, which invokes Gemini when the pointer is moved to request that it organize content on the screen or translate text. Google says Gemini does not act until the user requests it and can be disabled.
Rambler also converts voice notes into organized text with headings and lists, including multilingual input, while Create My Widget creates custom interface elements from a description written in natural language. Developers receive the Antigravity platform for developing, testing, and deploying applications, in addition to a full terminal environment for running tools such as Claude Code and Antigravity CLI.
What Changes in Practice?
Google is attempting to make the phone part of the computer environment rather than merely a device synchronized with it, by transferring settings, files, apps, and work context between the two devices. However, the announcement does not clarify the device models, their detailed specifications, or the availability of all features by market, and the prices and dates mentioned apply only to the specified markets.
On the security front, Googlebook relies on the ChromeOS architecture, a Google Titan hardware root of trust, and on-device malware detection. Google also describes a hypervisor-isolated pKVM certified at security level five, for running a Linux environment with full access to the terminal and development tools.
Price and Availability
The starting price includes 12 months of Google AI Pro with 5 terabytes of cloud storage and Gemini Advanced tools, in addition to three months of YouTube Premium, Adobe Photoshop, and other benefits. Google says the Googlebook OS will receive updates and new features for up to ten years. Availability in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia begins on October 5, 2026.
