Peak XV Partners raised the investment cap for each startup under its Surge platform from $3 million to $5 million, alongside the announcement of the program’s twelfth cohort, which comprises 18 startups across fields including artificial intelligence, robotics, space, healthcare, and financial technology.
The company said it invested more than $50 million in this cohort, while the participating companies collectively raised more than $90 million in seed funding. The median average investment per company also increased, but Peak XV did not disclose the amount.
Why did Peak XV increase the investment size?
Rajan Anandan, managing director at Peak XV, links the move to the increasing difficulty of raising a Series A round, as well as the emergence of companies that require more capital from the seed stage, particularly in deep technology. In practice, this means that initial investment is now being used to give companies more time to build complex technology products and prove their viability before moving on to the next round.
Surge includes 12 companies, some of which had already raised external funding before joining the program. Ditto, which is developing a broker for finding romantic partners within iMessage, raised $9.2 million in a round led by Peak XV, while Rosella raised approximately $2.5 million in a pre-seed round, and ULOOK secured approximately $2.3 million before participating in Surge.
A more global cohort
Although more than half of the cohort’s companies were founded in India, 13 companies are targeting global markets, and only five are focused directly on the Indian market. This highlights a trend in which startups distinguish between where they are founded and the market in which they expect to find their customers.
The group includes companies such as Alma, which is developing a platform for personal computing; HiLoop, which helps artificial intelligence companies adapt open models to specific applications; and Reinforce Labs, which is building tools to evaluate, test, and troubleshoot enterprise artificial intelligence systems.
The cohort also includes Puralink, which is developing autonomous robots to inspect underground pipeline networks; ULOOK, which is working on autonomous satellites for radio-frequency sensing and spectrum analysis; as well as August AI and Hoola Health in the healthcare sector, and Rosella in commercial insurance brokerage.
What is changing in practice?
The increase gives Peak XV greater capacity to fund companies that require long development cycles or high technology spending before reaching the market. However, it does not guarantee these companies’ success or their ability to raise a Series A; the source only establishes that the threshold for the next round has become higher from the investor’s perspective, without providing data on success rates or the new financing terms.
Since Surge launched in 2019, when Peak XV operated under the name Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia, the platform has supported more than 180 companies founded by entrepreneurs from more than 18 nationalities. Peak XV says the ten largest companies to emerge from the program’s cohorts collectively generate more than $1 billion in annual revenue. Three companies from the new cohort have not yet disclosed their names or products, and the company has only said that they operate in education, applied artificial intelligence, and medical products.
