Overwatch Season 5 Adds Hero Doctrine, a New Map, and a Collaboration with Solo Leveling

Overwatch Season 5 began on October 6, 2026, under the title A Grim Doctrine, bringing a set of changes that go beyond the usual cosmetic additions. The season’s most prominent feature is the playable debut of the new hero Doctrine, alongside a new Escort map, changes to the Battle Pass system, and redesigns for several heroes.

Doctrine Brings The Reign of Talon to an End

Doctrine arrives as a Support hero in the final chapter of the story The Reign of Talon. His story is connected to Doomfist, who freed him from Grímsvötn prison, with a mysterious shared past between the two characters.

Doctrine relies on synchronized offensive and defensive abilities. His staff, Eternal Scepter, allows him to heal allies and damage enemies from medium to long range. He also deploys bat-like drones to enhance the team’s healing and attack speed, while his ultimate redistributes life force across the battlefield, granting allies Overhealth and reducing enemies’ health.

Halloween-Themed Map and Event

The Grímsvötn facility, which appeared in Doctrine’s story, becomes a playable map in Escort mode. The material describes this addition as the first new map for the mode in years.

Meanwhile, the season’s event, Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, places the player in the role of a random hero and then grants them new random weapons after each death. The result is constantly changing gameplay combinations rather than reliance on a fixed loadout.

Practical Changes to the Battle Pass and Heroes

The revised system attempts to reduce the rigidity of progression and the problem of missing content. Battle Passes from Seasons 1 through 15 will return, and players can resume progress from where they stopped. The system also allows the current pass and an Unvaulted pass to be activated at the same time.

However, Unvaulted passes do not include Overwatch Coins, XP boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles, or Mythic skins for heroes and weapons.

Under the announced changes, Sombra moves from the Damage role to Support. Hotfix is now capable of healing a designated ally, while Cyberspace creates an area that heals allies and applies the new Weaken status to enemies. Roadhog also receives changes to Scrap Gun, which now fires two bursts per volley with a stronger central projectile, while the Trash Compactor ability fires an explosive projectile whose damage depends on the amount of damage absorbed.

Collaborative Content and Additional Events

The season includes a collaboration with the anime Solo Leveling, featuring skins for Genji, Reaper, Anran, Reinhardt, and Lifeweaver inspired by Sung Jin-Woo, the Shadow Monarchs, Cha Hae-In, and Choi Jong-In.

The cosmetic additions include Mythic Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang with four levels, Lucio’s first legendary weapon, Treblemaker, as well as the Tech Witches collection for D.Mon, Shion, Juno, Sierra, and Jetpack Cat.

The Team Drives event also returns from October 29 to November 1, with its scope expanded in Season 5 to include Quick Play, rather than only Competitive mode.

What Changes in Practice?

The season focuses on three interconnected areas: expanding the story through Doctrine and a map connected to him, easing seasonal content restrictions through unarchived Battle Passes, and redistributing the roles of certain heroes, particularly Sombra. The success of these changes will depend in practice on the impact of the rebalancing on matches and on how much players benefit from the old passes despite the absence of some key rewards from them. The material provides no additional details about how long each piece of content will be available or how it will be priced.
