Microsoft will begin rolling out the October security update for Windows 11 on October 13, 2026, with a set of practical improvements that go beyond the usual vulnerability fixes. The update arrives for versions 26H2, 25H2, and 24H2, while representing the last quality update for version 24H2 before it reaches the end of support.
Some features will roll out gradually through the Controlled Feature Rollout mechanism, so they may not appear on all devices immediately after the update is installed.
File Explorer Improvements
The preview pane in File Explorer can now preview HTML files that were downloaded after an Internet warning has been confirmed, while PDF file previews appear automatically. The home page will also remember the sections that the user expanded or collapsed, instead of resetting the layout on every visit.
The details pane is receiving improvements to the reliability of thumbnails for cloud files, along with a reorganization of file properties to make them easier to read.
Greater Control Over the User Interface
Microsoft is adding an Open apps maximized option under Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects. When enabled, apps open maximized without being converted to full-screen mode.
Magnifier is also receiving an updated toolbar, with icons closer to the Windows 11 design language and greater internal spacing to improve interface consistency.
For computers equipped with a precision touchpad, the update adds two scrolling options: scrolling vertically with one finger from the left or right edge, or continuing to scroll by moving the finger upward without lifting it.
The setting for customizing the Copilot key on the keyboard allows it to be reassigned to the Right Ctrl key or the context menu key, in addition to the customization options previously available.
What Changes in Practice?
The most significant functional addition is Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)'s ability to reuse Wi‑Fi profiles previously saved in the system. Previously, connectivity inside the recovery environment relied on Ethernet or Wi‑Fi networks that had been configured separately in advance. Wireless connectivity based on saved profiles is now enabled by default, which may make it easier to access tools such as Quick Machine Recovery when the system fails.
Microsoft is also adding a remote recovery management component, while expanding WinRE management capabilities for mobile device management (MDM) providers.
Other Additions and Removals
The update includes a new Tips app within Widgets, which can also be placed on the lock screen. The changes also include improvements to background transitions, support for higher-resolution previews and DIB images, improvements to slideshows across multiple desktops, and enhancements to Bluetooth, audio, and microphone connections.
Camera Roll Backup also appears to protect photos through OneDrive, along with support for the Ebrima font for the Garay and Beria Erfe scripts, and Emoji 17.0 availability. In Kiosk mode, additional shortcuts such as Windows + Tab, Windows + A, and Windows + C are blocked.
By contrast, Microsoft is removing the PC-to-PC Migration feature, which allowed files and settings to be transferred directly from an old computer while setting up a new computer.
certi.news reading: The update does not represent a major transformation for Windows 11, but it focuses on reducing friction in repetitive or sensitive tasks. The WinRE feature appears to be the most practically significant, as it reduces the steps required to connect when attempting to recover a failed device. Most of the other additions give users greater control over the interface, keyboard, and file management. The timing of the appearance of some features remains inconsistent because of the gradual rollout, and 24H2 users should note that this is the last quality update for their version.
