Samsung Begins Rolling Out One UI 9 Based on Android 17 to Galaxy Devices

Samsung has begun rolling out the Android 17-based One UI 9 update to a range of supported Galaxy phones and tablets. The update is currently available in parts of the world and to varying degrees, with some devices receiving the stable release while availability remains limited for others.

One UI 9 does not introduce a radical change to Samsung’s interface. Instead, it continues the improvement path that began with the redesign in One UI 7 and evolved with Android 16-based One UI 8. Key additions include more AI-powered tools, broader customization options, and improvements to privacy and device protection.

Devices That Have Begun Receiving the Update

The list of Galaxy devices that have received Android 17 so far includes the Galaxy S26, Galaxy S26+, and Galaxy S26 Ultra, in addition to the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra, with a broader rollout for this series. The update has also reached the Galaxy S25 FE, Galaxy S25 Edge, Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, with limited availability.

In the foldable device family, the rollout includes the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, and Galaxy Z TriFold, along with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, all of which are currently listed as having limited availability. Within the Galaxy A series, the Galaxy A57 has appeared on the list. The article says the list may be updated as new releases arrive.

What Does One UI 9 Offer?

The update expands the scope of the Now Nudge feature, which provides suggestions within the Galaxy experience, so that it appears in conversation notifications and as a floating button. It also adds new suggestions, such as entering booking details or addresses and saving places in Google Maps. My FanCam also lets users select a person within a video and follow them automatically while cropping the rest of the scene.

Other changes include improvements to Interpreter’s conversation mode, displaying call-related information on the call screen, and broader customization of the Quick Settings panel, including the ability to change the sizes of the brightness and volume sliders and the media player.

Greater Focus on Privacy and Health

One UI 9 adds a Warranty and Care menu within Settings to display warranty information and provide access to diagnostic tools. Users can also quickly lock the phone by pressing the volume-down and side buttons together, or through the power button in the Quick Settings panel, preventing biometric authentication from being used at the next unlock.

A blue indicator appears when an app accesses the location, with alerts in Now Brief about malware, apps from unknown sources, and unnecessary permissions. AI tools also monitor apps’ use of permissions and alert users to unnecessary access to their personal data, while apps identified by Samsung as malicious or vulnerable may be blocked until the user decides to remove them.

Samsung Health also receives a new interface and improved graphs, along with tools for analyzing trends and tracking sleep indicators, heart health, and cardiac load, in addition to Fitness Index and a tracker for exposure to loud sounds based on Galaxy Watch measurements and headphone audio.

What Changes in Practice?

The most significant practical change in this rollout is the shift of several AI and protection functions from separate features to layers integrated into notifications, calls, and permission management. However, the actual benefits will depend on the device model and region, as Samsung indicates that some features may vary between devices and has not announced a precise timeline for completing the global One UI 9 rollout.

The release also includes new lock-screen clock styles that adapt to the wallpaper, improvements to Samsung DeX for moving windows between desktops and viewing them from the recent apps screen, a shortcut for activating Bixby by raising the phone near the mouth, and accessibility updates such as enlarging and selecting text, the Select to speak feature, and TalkBack updates through Google Play.
