LineageOS 24 Arrives Early with Android 17 Support and Browser-Based Installation Tools

The LineageOS project has announced the launch of version 24, based on Android 17, in an early release that allows users of supported devices to move to Google’s latest version of the Android operating system. The release comes ahead of the project’s celebration of the tenth anniversary of its founding on December 24, 2026, while new builds will roll out to devices over the coming weeks according to the readiness of the maintenance teams.

LineageOS 24 carries the version number 24.0 and includes security patches spanning August 2025 through October 2026 across the supported branches. The announcement does not mean that the system is immediately available for every device, as its arrival on each model depends on the completion of compatibility requirements by its maintainers.

Redesigned Applications and the Addition of an Image Editor

The release focuses on updating the interfaces of most core LineageOS applications according to the Material Design 3 Expressive language. One of the most notable additions is Canvas, an integrated image editor that provides basic tools such as cropping, white balance, and filters, and integrates with the Glimpse and Aperture applications.

The Updater application has also received an extensive redesign and now supports seamless updates by default on devices using an A/B partition layout, with the aim of reducing the time required to install updates. The Twelve music player, meanwhile, offers faster loading times with large media libraries, improved Jellyfin support, and a dedicated tab for the most-played tracks.

The Jelly browser now supports running progressive web app-like applications through a new shortcut, enabling access to these experiences without installing applications from third-party stores.

Simpler Installation via WebUSB

The project is adding optional flashing tools that operate directly from the browser using WebUSB and support common operations such as ADB Fastboot, Amlogic Burn, and Samsung Odin protocols. The official device guides in the Wiki remain the default and fully supported path, but the new tools may reduce the need to install additional software on a computer for users with less experience installing custom systems.

New Restrictions on Older Devices

On the maintenance side, LineageOS is restricting future releases for devices running Linux Kernel versions 4.4 and 4.9. These older kernels will no longer be eligible to receive LineageOS 23.2 or 24.0 builds, but they will remain supported on LineageOS 22.2 with ongoing monthly security patches.

At the same time, the project has expanded its use of shared kernels for SoC platforms and unified compatibility layers for older devices to simplify maintenance across common Qualcomm and Amlogic chipsets.

Why Does This Release Matter?

LineageOS 24 combines a system-level transition to Android 17 with practical improvements to the user and installation experience. However, the actual benefit remains linked to the list of supported devices and the maintenance team’s decision for each model. Owners of devices with older kernels may also have to remain on LineageOS 22.2 to receive security updates. Users can consult the official Wiki to determine their device’s readiness and upgrade path.
