Cloudflare launches "Full Transaction Detection" technology to enhance WAF protection

A qualitative leap in web traffic inspection

Cloudflare has announced a major update to its Web Application Firewall (WAF) platform, introducing the "Full Transaction Detection" feature and response rules. This new technology enables the system to inspect the HTTP request in conjunction with the server response, rather than only inspecting the incoming request, providing deeper visibility into whether an intrusion attempt actually succeeded or was blocked.

Why this development matters

Most traditional security solutions rely solely on inspecting incoming requests, which can lead to a technical dilemma: either over-blocking (causing false positives that disrupt legitimate applications) or being lenient in inspection (allowing vague threats to pass). By linking the request to the response, the system can now distinguish between a failed exploit attempt and a successful breach that led to the leakage of sensitive data.

For example, in Path Traversal attempts, the request alone may not be sufficient to determine the damage. However, when analyzing the response, the system can detect whether the server has returned sensitive configuration files (such as database passwords), and then intervene immediately to block the response before it reaches the attacker.

What changes practically for users?

  • Response Rules: Administrators can now build rules that prevent the server response from being sent if it contains indicators of compromise, providing an additional layer of protection even if the request bypasses the initial check.
  • More accurate security analytics: Inspection results are stored in new data fields (such as cf.waf.signature.response.confidence), supporting security teams in investigating incidents and understanding attack context.
  • Availability for everyone: Cloudflare confirmed that these features are available to all customers, including free plan subscribers, while providing managed protection for high-severity vulnerabilities such as the recent php2shell vulnerability.

Limitations and technical considerations

Despite the power this feature provides, there are limitations to consider; response rules cannot undo actions that the server has already executed before the response reaches the firewall. Additionally, the ability to create rules based on the Response Body content is not currently available, as the system in its current phase focuses on analyzing response metadata and status codes.

This step comes at a time when attacks utilizing artificial intelligence agents capable of adapting attack payloads based on application feedback are becoming increasingly complex, making "Full Transaction Detection" a necessary defensive tool to keep pace with modern threats.
