Growth of Turkey's Technology Sector: 115 Technology Development Zones Record 1.85 Trillion Lira in Sales

The technology sector in Turkey has witnessed significant expansion according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Industry and Technology, with the number of Technology Development Zones (Technoparks) reaching 115, of which 97 are currently operational, while 18 are still in the infrastructure development stages.

Record Performance and Production Figures

These zones play a pivotal role in connecting academics and researchers with industry, with the aim of accelerating the pace of transforming technical knowledge into commercial products suitable for export. This activity is reflected in the following figures:

  • Sales Volume: Total sales of companies operating in these zones reached 1.85 trillion Turkish Lira.
  • Exports: Companies recorded technology exports valued at 20.86 billion dollars.
  • Workforce: More than 135,000 employees work in these zones, distributed across 13,673 companies.
  • Innovation: 2,618 patents have been registered, with over 6,200 patent applications currently being processed, in addition to hundreds of industrial models and registered designs.

Integration of the Research and Development Ecosystem

In addition to Technoparks, the data indicates parallel growth in Research and Development (R&D) centers, which have reached 1,365, with more than 80,000 research projects completed. The design center sector also saw growth, reaching 349 centers, which enhances Turkey's ability to develop high value-added products.

What Does This Expansion Mean?

This report represents an indicator of the maturity of the innovation ecosystem in Turkey, where the focus is no longer limited to theoretical academic research but has shifted toward expanding funding and commercial production. Istanbul and Ankara lead the scene in terms of the density of these zones, indicating that technical activities are concentrated in major urban centers, with a geographical spread covering most Turkish provinces to support regional technical development.
