Reddit Moves Toward Restricting Browsing to Registered Users Only

A Radical Shift in Access Policy

Reddit confirmed during its latest earnings report its intention to transition to a mandatory login browsing experience. This change means that users will not be able to browse the platform's content without having an active account, which will also affect browsing via Incognito mode or non-logged-in browsers.

Why is Reddit Taking This Step?

The platform's CEO, Steve Huffman, explained that this decision aims to achieve several strategic and technical goals:

  • Data Protection: Huffman noted that the vast majority of unauthorized access, including data scraping and content theft, occurs through non-logged-in browsing interfaces.
  • Improving User Experience: The company claims that mandatory login will allow for providing more relevant content to users and better personalizing their experience.
  • Enhancing Advertising: Registered user data provides more accurate signals for ad targeting, which increases the efficiency of the platform's business model.
  • Regulatory Compliance: This step helps the platform better adapt to emerging global laws and regulations regarding data privacy.

What Changes Practically?

Reddit plans to begin comprehensive tests of this policy in selected markets outside the United States during the fourth quarter of 2026. Based on the results of these tests, the experience will be rolled out globally. Despite the move toward restricting access, Huffman indicated that the platform's homepage might remain accessible to non-registered users to ensure that visitors coming from search engines can reach linked content, while emphasizing that the company is currently working on redesigning the Incognito mode in its application.

This announcement comes at a time when the platform witnessed a noticeable decline in traffic from search engines during the third quarter of 2026, as the platform lost more than one million referral visits on average per week, which reinforces the company's trend toward full control over access to its data.
