Meta has officially announced its plan to end operating system update support for its popular Quest 2 and Quest Pro virtual reality headsets after March 2027. This decision marks the end of the lifecycle for the Quest 2 device, which remained on the market for six years and achieved record sales of approximately 20 million units.
Details of Support Termination
According to the official Meta developer blog, both headsets will stop receiving new feature updates starting with system version v213 in March 2027. However, the company has committed to providing essential security updates for both devices until the end of 2027, giving users an additional transition period.
What This Means for Users
Meta has reassured its users that ending system updates will not disable the devices; cross-play functionality will remain available, and existing games will continue to work normally as long as they do not rely on new technical features introduced in subsequent operating systems. The company also requires developers to provide a 6-month notice if they decide to end support for their games on these devices.
Why Is Meta Making This Decision?
This move comes as Meta focuses on developing next-generation hardware, such as the anticipated virtual reality headset expected to launch early next year at a price of $1,299. The new devices feature advanced processing chips, high-resolution AMOLED displays, and a lighter design. Since the Quest 2 relies on a relatively older processing chip, the company is seeking to direct its software resources toward more capable devices that support next-generation technologies.
It is worth noting that the Quest 2 will reach a total of 7 years of security updates, while the Quest Pro will receive shorter support given its launch in October 2022. Developer support for games on these devices is expected to decline significantly after January 2028.
