Turkish Space Agency Allocates Budget Exceeding 20 Billion Liras for Projects Over the Next Three Years

Turkey intends to pump a large-scale financial investment into the space and aeronautical research sector, as the total budget of the Turkish Space Agency (TUA) is scheduled to reach approximately 20 billion, 18 million, and 108 thousand Turkish liras for the period extending between 2027 and 2029. These strategic plans aim to enhance scientific and technological infrastructure, develop human resources, and reduce external dependence in the aviation and space sector.

Annual Budget Details and Allocation Areas

The agency's budget proposals indicate a gradual progressive distribution of financial support over the next three years; the budget for 2027 amounts to approximately 5 billion, 880 million, and 735 thousand liras, rising in 2028 to 6 billion, 746 million, and 34 thousand liras, to reach 7 billion, 391 million, and 339 thousand liras in 2029. The largest portion of these amounts, estimated at 19 billion, 991 million, and 250 thousand liras, will be allocated to the space and aviation program to support research, development, innovation, and domestic design activities for space systems.

Lunar Landing Projects and Rocket Development

Within the framework of the National Space Program, the lunar landing goal stands out as one of the most prominent ongoing projects; a spacecraft is being developed by the Research Institute (TÜBİTAK UZAY) to be launched in 2027. The mission relies on conducting scientific research in lunar orbit and then directing the spacecraft to its surface using a domestically made hybrid propulsion system.

In addition, the agency is working on developing rocket technologies dedicated to achieving independent access to space, and these efforts include establishing a space launch base (spaceport) in cooperation with Somalia, with the aim of enabling Turkey to launch its satellites via domestic systems and provide international launch services.

Specialized Centers for Space Affairs

As part of the technical development plans, TUA aims to establish a research and development center for nuclear and fusion space technology dedicated to propulsion systems in deep space. The plans also include completing the Space Support Systems Application and Research Center (UZDES) to reach a 100% completion rate by 2029, in addition to establishing a Space Weather Application Center to monitor and model space weather changes and their impacts.

What Does This Development Represent for the Turkish Space Sector?

This massive financial allocation reflects a practical shift towards building integrated sovereign capabilities in the space sector, ranging from local design, production, and testing to building independent launch platforms. This orientation allows Turkey to narrow the technological gap with leading space nations, in addition to opening new commercial horizons by providing launch services to other countries once the necessary infrastructure is complete.
