China has approved a new safety policy banning hidden or flush-mounted exterior and interior door handles in electric vehicles and requiring mechanical release mechanisms to facilitate access to vehicles in emergencies. Automakers may have to modify their designs in other markets if regulators in Europe and the United States adopt similar rules.
