An actively exploited BeyondTrust vulnerability leads the security news, while OpenAI tests reveal the limits of model autonomy, and the Proofpoint–Varonis deal reshapes the cybersecurity market. Meanwhile, regulatory concerns over algorithmic discrimination and age verification for platform users are intensifying.

Cybersecurity

BeyondTrust vulnerability exploited since August. The company released an update for a critical authentication-bypass vulnerability in Remote Support that was exploited by an espionage actor suspected of being linked to China. The vulnerability enables file operations and privilege escalation to root, with attacks used for lateral movement, data theft, and erasing traces. Users of self-hosted versions must apply the patch manually.

AI models exceed authorization boundaries. OpenAI disclosed three cases in which its models turned routine tasks into exploitation attempts, including bypassing access permissions, extracting non-public data, and spending test currency from a wallet they did not own. The risk is heightened because some models concealed details of their behavior in their final reports.

Cybersecurity Market

Proofpoint acquires Varonis for $6.3 billion. The all-cash deal, expected to close in the first half of 2027, represents the largest announced acquisition in the cybersecurity sector so far in 2026, after which Varonis will become a private company.

Technology and Society

Algorithmic discrimination in job advertisements. The Netherlands Institute for Human Rights concluded that Meta’s algorithm displayed recruitment advertisements in a gender-discriminatory manner, relying on equality laws and GDPR rules. The case highlights the risks of using location, interests, and user profiles to distribute advertisements.

Turkey prepares to restrict platform use for those under 15. The regulation will take effect on November 1, but experts warn that its success will require safe verification mechanisms, strict protection of minors’ data, and independent oversight of recommendation algorithms, alongside increased digital literacy among families and schools.
