Twenty-five leading mathematicians, all Fields Medalists, signed an open letter warning that AI laboratories’ race to solve famous problems threatens the attribution of ideas and research transparency. This comes amid escalating disputes between OpenAI and academic researchers over documentation, the publication of proofs, and the use of researchers’ work.
OpenAI said it had produced a solution to the Navier–Stokes problem using an advanced model and 10,000 artificial intelligence agents, but researchers raised questions about the timing of the announcement and the possibility that it was connected to previous research data. The proof still needs to be published and independently evaluated before the problem can be considered solved according to scientific standards.
