Electric Vehicles Avoid $20 Billion in Oil Consumption as the United States Falls Behind

Ember estimated that electric vehicle fleets in oil-importing countries avoided consuming 200 million barrels of crude between March and August 2026, worth up to $20 billion. At the same time, the share of fully electric vehicles in the United States fell below that of 49 countries, including India and Brazil.
