Google unveiled the Pixel Watch 5, designed to leverage the capabilities of Gemini and Google Health, with improvements to voice assistance and fitness and health tracking. The company says the watch offers the most accurate GPS tracking in Pixel Watch history, along with new Health Guardian features, including respiratory emergency detection and monthly summaries of trends in blood pressure, sleep, and metabolic health.
Preorders for the watch begin on August 12, 2026, while general availability begins on August 20, with prices starting at $399 for the 41mm version and $429 for the 45mm version. A 45mm Stephen Curry Special Edition is also available for $579, and will reach stores on September 3.
Proactive assistance through Gemini
The Pixel Watch 5 introduces the At a Glance interface, which displays context-related updates directly on the watch face, such as boarding passes when arriving at the airport or the number of stops remaining on a morning commute. Google has also improved the Raise to Talk function, so users only need to raise their wrist to speak to Gemini and start a workout, set a timer, or access dinner reservations from Gmail.
Basic AI-powered actions are processed on the device, allowing them to be performed quickly with low latency even when the watch is offline, according to Google. The Gemini Intelligence Proactive Suggestions feature turns multistep tasks into actions that can be completed with one tap; when a family member asks about the time of dinner, Gemini can find the details in the calendar and display them on the watch. Double-tap finger gestures also let users select, confirm, and send the suggestion without using the phone.
The watch is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor and an energy-efficient dual-chip architecture. Google says the device has 50% more RAM and a 12% improvement in CPU performance, making it 20% faster than the previous generation.
GPS, strength workouts, and sleep tracking
According to Google’s internal tests, the watch provides twice the accuracy in route tracking compared with previous generations, including in dense urban environments and covered routes. Google uses three-dimensional building models to track satellite signal paths, along with real-time data from a global network of weather stations to correct readings according to local weather conditions.
Google compared route-tracking performance in an internal study conducted in July 2026 using Pixel Watch 5 prototype devices with the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro, during outdoor running, walking, and cycling sessions lasting no more than three hours.
A wrist-based strength-training experience is scheduled to launch later, with step-by-step guidance for sets and rest periods and the recording of weights and repetitions. Google Health Coach also creates personalized workouts based on users’ goals and suggests training adjustments based on recovery indicators such as sleep and heart-rate variability.
The watch improves sleep-stage detection by 15%, according to Google, and provides bedtime automation that pauses audiobooks when the user falls asleep, along with a dedicated sleep interface. Smart Wake monitors heart rate and movement during the 30 minutes before the alarm, aiming to choose a suitable point during light sleep to wake the user before the scheduled time.
Health Guardian features and health alerts
The Pixel Watch 5 introduces respiratory emergency detection, which uses multiple sensors—including PPG, an accelerometer, and a barometer—along with on-device AI to detect severe and sustained drops in oxygen saturation. If the watch detects an emergency and the user is unresponsive, it can contact emergency services and send the user’s precise location. The feature will launch first in Europe, with availability varying by region and device.
Google is also adding three monthly summaries covering trends in blood pressure, sleep breathing quality, and insulin resistance. These summaries will roll out later, with the first detailed summary arriving after the watch has been worn for one month. According to the company, they are based on Health Foundation Models trained on billions of minutes of sensor data from users who agreed to share their data and validated against reference clinical measurements.
Google emphasizes that these features are intended for wellness and general information, not for diagnosing or treating diseases or replacing medical advice. Blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends do not provide real-time clinical readings and should not be used to adjust medications or treatment plans. Respiratory emergency detection may not detect every case, and its effectiveness varies according to individual factors. Emergency calls also depend on battery power, cellular connectivity, and the response of emergency services.
Design, pricing, and compatibility
The watch features a curved Actua 360 display with a brightness of 3000 nits, 11 new complication styles, and two new watch faces, as well as AI-generated watch faces that emulate the user’s style. Battery life reaches 30 hours on the 41mm version and 40 hours on the 45mm version.
New colors include Fog and Canyon, exclusive to the 41mm size, and Olive with a Pyrite case, along with a repairable construction and HNBR bands. The Pixel Watch 5 works with most phones running Android 12 or later and requires a Google Account and the Pixel Watch app. The availability of some apps, languages, and features varies, and certain Google Health functions may require a Google Health Premium subscription.
