Microsoft offers Azure Database for PostgreSQL as a fully managed cloud database built on the open-source PostgreSQL engine, with capabilities aimed at developing artificial intelligence applications. Azure handles infrastructure, updates, backups, scaling, and failure management, while developers continue using standard PostgreSQL tools.

The service focuses on keeping operational, transactional, and AI data within a single managed database, which may reduce application complexity and data access latency compared with relying on external vector stores or dedicated paths for AI applications.

AI and Vector Search Capabilities

Azure Database for PostgreSQL supports adding pgvector to perform similarity searches between vectors within PostgreSQL, along with the azure_ai extension, which enables large language models to be called directly from the database. Microsoft says these capabilities support use cases such as semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and building intelligent applications and agents.

The service also provides DiskANN indexing to improve vector search performance, as well as machine learning algorithms to help tune performance. Other capabilities include index recommendations, performance tuning, and maintenance, with the aim of reducing manual intervention in managing changing workloads.

Scaling, Availability, and Operations Management

The service enables scaling to be separated between compute and storage resources. It also supports flexible clusters for distributing PostgreSQL workloads that require high throughput or processing large amounts of data, without the need to rewrite applications. Azure provides up to 99.99% availability through built-in, zone-redundant high availability, along with managed patching, backups, and automatic failover when failures occur.

The service includes continuous backup and point-in-time restore, in addition to options for addressing business continuity and disaster recovery requirements. Microsoft also provides data mirroring to Microsoft Fabric, enabling Azure Database for PostgreSQL data to be queried and analyzed with near-real-time latency.

Migration, Compatibility, and Security

Azure supports online and offline migration paths from on-premises environments, virtual machines, and other managed PostgreSQL services. The tools include Azure Migrate and Microsoft guidance for planning, validation, and execution, along with AI-supported assessments to assist with migrations from Oracle to PostgreSQL.

The service maintains compatibility with common PostgreSQL versions, extensions, drivers, and tools, and enables database management through the PostgreSQL extension for Visual Studio Code. Microsoft also mentions features for network security, identity management, access control, and data encryption in transit, in use, and at rest, in addition to more than 100 compliance certifications, including more than 50 certifications associated with specific regions and countries.

Pricing and Availability

The service offers pay-as-you-go or reserved payment options, supporting workloads ranging from development and testing to business-critical production environments. Microsoft says that using the service may reduce total cost of ownership by up to 58% compared with on-premises and self-managed PostgreSQL environments, according to a report commissioned from ESG and distributed by TechTarget in March 2025.

Azure Database for PostgreSQL is available in more than 60 Azure regions across the Americas, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The free Azure account also provides up to 750 hours of burstable compute resources and 32 gigabytes of storage per month for 12 months, according to the terms listed on the service page.
