AWS unveiled a range of new updates and launches in its weekly report published on August 17, 2026, with a clear focus on application monitoring, simplifying permissions management, and expanding artificial intelligence and cybersecurity options within its cloud services.
Monitoring Application Issues Within EC2
Amazon EC2 added a new application health check designed to detect issues occurring at the application level itself, rather than only at the infrastructure or instance level. The check can detect situations such as a web server no longer accepting requests, a Docker daemon failure, an incorrect network configuration, or a network interface stopping the flow of data.
In practice, this gives operations teams a signal more closely tied to the actual service experience. Instead of merely knowing that an EC2 instance is running, they can verify whether the applications users depend on are responding correctly.
Simplifying IAM Role Creation
AWS also launched IAM Role Manager, which automatically creates the access roles required by AWS services. When configuring a supported service through the console, the manager creates a default role on the user’s behalf, or reuses an existing role in the account if its permissions match the necessary requirements.
Role Manager supports six AWS service consoles at launch. The change targets a common issue when beginning to use cloud services: configuring the correct role and granting it the required permissions before starting the service.
OpenAI Daybreak Available Through Amazon Bedrock
AWS announced the availability of the OpenAI Daybreak cyber defense initiative to eligible customers through Amazon Bedrock. The initiative provides controlled access to advanced artificial intelligence models for cybersecurity use cases.
Daybreak Blue, powered by the GPT-5.6 Sol model, is the starting point for most security teams in tasks including vulnerability discovery, detection engineering, and incident response. Daybreak Red, powered by the GPT-5.6 Cyber model, is intended for advanced and authorized tasks such as vulnerability research, exploit reproduction, and the development of mitigation procedures.
Registration requires contacting OpenAI or the AWS account team to verify eligibility. The material does not indicate that the service is automatically available to all Bedrock customers.
New Models and Service Updates
AWS expanded the collection of foundation models available through Amazon SageMaker JumpStart, including models from NVIDIA, Z.ai, Qwen, Black Forest Labs, Google, Redis, JetBrains, and LightOn. The list includes models for generative artificial intelligence, optical character recognition, embeddings, agents, and other tasks designed for enterprise use cases.
In open-source data services, OpenSearch 3.7 became available on Amazon OpenSearch Service on July 30, 2026. The release provides tools for querying, alerting, and tracking service-level objectives across logs, traces, and metrics from a single interface, along with vector retrieval up to 5.5 times faster, according to AWS.
Valkey 9.1 also became available in Amazon ElastiCache for node-based clusters on June 23, 2026. The release provides a redesigned input/output threading model, with throughput increases of up to 17% and memory-use reductions of up to 20% for strings smaller than 128 bytes.
Additional Changes Relevant to Cloud Administrators
AWS indicated that Certificate Manager will stop supporting public certificates validated through email by September 30, 2027. Users who rely on this method must switch to DNS validation, while HTTP validation will remain available for Amazon CloudFront distributions.
AWS also introduced a new VPN client based on OpenVPN3, with command-line support, administrative controls, and full backward compatibility with existing AWS Client VPN endpoints. It also announced Oracle Exadata on Exascale for Oracle AI Database@AWS, enabling computing and storage to be scaled independently and in small increments, with pay-per-use pricing.
On the open-source community front, AWS contributors participated in Open Source Summit Korea 2026 and MCP DevSummit Seoul 2026, where OpenSearch and Valkey developers and users met to collaborate and exchange expertise.
