Advantech Japan has unveiled a new strategy to help Japanese equipment manufacturers integrate physical AI into their products, based on three areas: standard products, near-complete customization, and custom design services extending through to the final product. The move comes as AI applications expand from data centers and edge devices to machines and systems that interact directly with the physical world.
The strategy combines Advantech’s expertise in industrial computers and edge-computing components with the needs of Japanese companies that develop specialized equipment and require adaptable solutions. Three Paths for Cooperation with Manufacturers
The first path involves providing standard products that can be integrated directly into equipment. The second enables these products to be configured according to customer requirements, while the third extends to custom design services covering stages from design through to the final product. This structure aims to reduce equipment development time while giving manufacturers greater flexibility in selecting components and functions.
The company supports these paths with a software platform called WEDA, designed to help assemble software and modern technologies, including AI technologies, into hardware solutions. Advantech describes its vision for this ecosystem with the phrase “Choose & Combine,” meaning selecting and integrating the appropriate elements rather than building every component from scratch.
Target Sectors
Focus areas include smart factories, healthcare, retail, transportation, energy, and smart cities, as well as autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and humanoid robots. The company is betting that the diversity of these applications will increase demand for solutions combining edge computing, AI, and device-control capabilities.
Advantech Japan says the expansion of physical AI is changing the nature of equipment manufacturers’ requirements. The issue is no longer limited to selecting an industrial computer, but also includes designing an integrated system capable of running AI models and meeting the requirements of the final product.
Increasing Production Capacity and Security Readiness
The company plans to expand its production capacity in Japan to 2.5 times its current level by 2028, alongside growing demand for customization and design services aimed at Japanese customers. It believes that having the ability to cover broader stages of the product-development chain will be an important factor in serving these companies.
