On August 20, 2026, Google announced new AI-powered educational tools within Google Search and Gemini, designed to help students understand complex topics, prepare for exams, and organize study materials. The package includes interactive visuals, personalized quizzes, 3D simulations, and study notebooks, in addition to generating educational materials from files uploaded by users.
Interactive Experiences and Customized Quizzes in Search
Google Search will be able to create tools and simulations related to the search topic. When searching for the pH scale, for example, users can access an interactive visual explaining the basic concepts, then ask to locate citrus fruits on the scale to generate a new experience tailored to that question. Generative user interface features are now available globally in English within AI Mode, while the same features have begun rolling out to AI Overviews.
Search can also create customized practice quizzes in science, mathematics, humanities, and foreign languages, as well as quizzes for the ACT, AP, ENEM, GRE, JEE, LSAT, MCAT, NEET, and SAT exams. The interactive questions will include an explanation for each answer and links to additional information. To provide exam-preparation content, Google collaborated with The Princeton Review, Careers360, PhysicsWallah, and Akira Enem. Customized quizzes are available for free through AI Overviews and AI Mode worldwide in English.
Google Lens Moves from Providing Answers to Following the Solution Process
In the coming weeks, Google will add an interactive learning experience to Lens. Students will be able to photograph a question or notes using the Lens icon in the Google app, allowing the tool to analyze the concept related to the material, identify potential mistakes, and provide guidance at the point where the student got stuck. Follow-up questions can be asked to receive a more detailed explanation through AI Mode. The feature will be available globally on Android and iOS in English.
Study Notebooks and Materials from Uploaded Files
Google is bringing the Gemini Notebook feature, formerly known as NotebookLM, to AI Mode. Users can create a separate notebook for each course or project and add lecture presentations, syllabus documents, articles published online, and previous AI Mode conversations. Existing notebooks in Gemini Notebook or the Gemini app will automatically appear within Search, with sources and custom instructions synchronized across Google products.
Study notebooks are available in AI Mode in English in more than 180 countries, excluding the European Economic Area, with Google planning to add support for local languages in the following weeks. Search can also prepare a one-page document summarizing key concepts based on images of handwritten notes and lesson presentations. The initial launch supports documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and text files, with plans to add the feature to AI Overviews soon.
What Changes for Students in Practice?
The new tools combine search, practice, mistake analysis, and source organization in a single workflow, rather than simply providing a text answer. However, initial availability remains tied to the English language, and the availability scope varies by tool; therefore, not all users will receive the same experience at the same time.
Educational Additions in Gemini
Gemini will allow users to start multi-stage research reports through Gemini Live, while the system conducts the research in the background and users can leave the conversation, then receive a notification when the report is complete. The results can then be discussed verbally through Gemini Live. Gemini responses will also include interactive tables, grids, and 3D simulations designed according to the question, such as a DNA model that can be rotated and zoomed. Google is also working on an educational hub within the Gemini app that includes study notebooks, flashcards, and practice quizzes.
