Cloudflare announced that the VoidZero project, which joined the company four months ago, has released more than 80 versions and closed more than 1,200 issues, with a clear focus on reducing the time required by JavaScript development tools. The company confirms that Vite, Vitest, Rolldown, Oxc, and Vite+ will remain open source, vendor-neutral, and community-driven.
Major Improvements in Development Tools
Cloudflare says that the Oxc React Compiler, launched in August, translates React.js applications at speeds of up to ten times that of the original Babel-based React Compiler implementation, while using less memory and providing more complete error handling. Vite users can enable it through the oxc-transform-react package.
Vitest 5, released in September, is now up to 50% faster than Vitest 4 in some scenarios, thanks to sharing transformed files between projects, caching modules on disk, and reducing the data exchanged between the main process and workers. The release adds the vitest doctor tool for analyzing setup, import, transformation, and test times, along with Trace View for reexamining browser test failures.
tsgolint, the type-information-based linting engine behind Oxlint, is now stable and supports 59 of the 61 type-aware rules in typescript-eslint. Cloudflare estimates that it is 12 to 18 times faster than ESLint with typescript-eslint on large codebases, with the ability to share the same TypeScript program between linting and type checking.
VoidZero also rewrote the JSON, CSS, SCSS, Less, GraphQL, and YAML formatters in Oxfmt using Rust, and says the tool is now seven times faster than Prettier while maintaining compatible output. Vite+ is now available in version 1.0, combining Vite 8, Vitest 5, Rolldown, Oxlint, Oxfmt, and task caching into a unified toolchain with ready-to-use default settings.
What Changes in Practice for Developers and Agents?
Cloudflare believes that speeding up build, linting, and testing tools is no longer relevant only to developers. As inference accelerates, type checking, running linting tools, and building code may become bottlenecks at which coding agents wait before continuing their tasks. Because VoidZero's tools are built on top of one another, improving a layer such as Oxc or Rolldown can affect higher-level tools such as Vite.
The company is working on Bundled Dev, formerly known as Full Bundle Mode, a development mode that uses Vite's production bundle during development. It is expected to improve development-server performance in large applications and reduce network traffic when using remote environments, but it is still experimental, despite being used internally by the Cloudflare dashboard.
Openness and Remaining Limitations
Cloudflare says it allocated $1 million to the Vite ecosystem fund and then committed an additional $1 million to open-source projects. VoidZero also plans to improve the Oxc parser by a potential factor of up to three, redesign Rolldown's module-splitting algorithm, and release an open-source, self-hostable version of the Void deployment platform built on Cloudflare.
The figures cited, such as “10 times” and “18 times,” are measurements reported by Cloudflare in specific contexts and are not a uniform guarantee for every project. Bundled Dev is also still experimental, while future plans represent stated intentions rather than features that are finally available.
