How to Set Up the New Parental Controls in iOS 27

iOS 27 redesigns parental controls on Apple devices, adding more detailed options for managing screen time, web browsing, and communication. Apple says it developed these changes in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics and also released a guide titled Building Healthy Digital Habits to help families balance screen use with sleep, exercise, studying, and family time.

What has changed in parental controls?

Apple replaced the App Limits feature with Time Allowances, which lets parents distribute the permitted daily time across categories such as social networking, entertainment, and games, instead of setting a separate limit for each app. Parents can create custom categories and set a time limit for each within a daily total.

Ask to Browse requests a parent’s approval before a child visits an unapproved website in Safari, with approval requests arriving through the Messages app. Ask to Add Contacts lets a child request a parent’s approval before calling or messaging a new number.

Apple has expanded the scope of Communication Safety. In addition to detecting and blurring nude images in Messages, AirDrop, and FaceTime, the feature now also detects graphic scenes of violence and disturbing imagery. Pause Devices can also lock a child’s device immediately with a single tap.

What changes for families in practice?

These tools provide more detailed control than setting a general screen-time limit, since restrictions can be tied to the type of activity, location, or contacts. Parents can also set different schedules for weekdays and weekends, enable Ask to Buy to approve app purchases, and review usage from the redesigned Screen Time dashboard.

Activation and setup requirements

The new features are not enabled automatically when just one device is updated. All devices in the Family Sharing group, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV, must run iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, or tvOS 27, depending on the device type. Devices that cannot be updated will continue using the iOS 26 tools, leaving differences in the level of protection within the same family.

Setup begins from a child account in the Family Sharing group through Settings > Family on iPhone. When creating a new child account, Apple suggests age-appropriate settings instead of displaying all default apps. Ask to Browse, adult website restrictions, and contact management are enabled by default for children under 13, while Communication Safety is enabled for those under 18. After the child turns 13, some restrictions are not enabled automatically, and the decision to keep them becomes the parents’ responsibility.

A point to keep in mind

The system’s effectiveness depends on updating all devices linked to the account, so families should review older hardware compatibility before relying on the new settings. Apple also recommends reassessing restrictions periodically as the child grows, based on the age-group guidance prepared by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
