Google announced a set of updates to the Google Health ecosystem and Fitbit devices, aimed at connecting activity, sleep, nutrition, and certain health metrics in a single experience. The package includes new tools for monitoring health changes over time, a major improvement to automatic exercise detection, and an expansion of the network of applications and services integrated with the platform.
The updates follow the addition of more than 55 features and fixes to the Google Health and Google Health Coach apps, including greater customization for the Today tab, expanded focus metrics, an improved Coach memory, deeper integration with Apple Health, and meal logging through a quick photo or a conversation with Coach.
Proactive Health Metrics Through Health Guardian
Health Guardian features, a set of tools for monitoring subtle changes in health and safety, will begin rolling out to Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge later in October 2026 for users subscribed to Google Health Premium. Users can set up blood pressure and insulin resistance trends within the Google Health app, then receive a report at the beginning of each month if they meet the device-wearing requirements.
Google says Coach can use these changes to help adjust a fitness plan and provide personalized guidance on lifestyle and wellness, as well as context that can be shared with a doctor. However, the company clarifies that these features are not intended for medical purposes and should not be used to diagnose or treat diseases or manage medications and insulin.
Detecting More Than 100 Types of Activities
Google has improved automatic activity detection to work on Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge, and Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5. The number of activities the system can detect has increased from 10 to more than 100, including strength training, swimming, team sports, and racquet sports.
The system relies on additional context such as workout routines, previous data, manual adjustments, and location when permission is granted. According to internal evaluations that compared the updated model with the previous one on manually tracked exercises, Google says detection accuracy nearly doubled and missed-exercise cases fell by more than half.
Exercises lasting more than 15 minutes and accompanied by a sustained increase in heart rate are logged automatically by default, and the app typically sends a summary within 30 minutes. The system also learns from the user's confirmation or modification of an activity to improve its future predictions.
New Health Data Integrations
Google announced a multiyear strategic partnership with Flo Health, enabling synchronization of Flo app data with Google Health beginning in early 2027 to provide insights related to the cycle and life stages. The two companies are also collaborating on clinical research concerning women's health.
In the United States, users will soon be able to connect the over-the-counter Abbott Lingo continuous glucose monitoring device to the Google Health app to view glucose, meal, exercise, and sleep data in a unified view. MyFitnessPal Premium users will be able to share more detailed food logs, while other users will continue to share daily meal logs. Function Health will also enable the import of laboratory test results later in fall 2026.
What Changes in Practice?
Here, Google Health is evolving from an app that collects scattered records into a coordination layer between wearable devices and nutrition, cycle, testing, and glucose-monitoring apps. The practical value depends on consistently wearing the devices, the accuracy of the data added by the user, and service availability by country, device, and subscription. Health results also require review by a specialist, because Google itself limits the use and describes the features as wellness tools rather than a substitute for medical care.
The ecosystem requires a Google Account, the Google Health app, and an internet connection, and works with most phones using Android 11 or later and iOS 16.4 or later. The new metal Fitbit Air band is available for preorder in Champagne Gold and Polished Silver for $69.99, or as a bundle with Fitbit Air in Obsidian for $149.99 through Target and the Google Store.
