Apple releases HomePod 27.2 update: new visual features and quad surround sound support

Apple released the new software update version 27.2 today for the HomePod and HomePod mini smart speakers. This update enhances the capabilities of existing devices and paves the way for the launch of the new generation of devices scheduled to arrive in the market soon, as it includes visual and technical features that elevate the listening and home control experience.

Interactive visual experience with Sound Glow

The Sound Glow feature is the most prominent addition in this update, available for both the HomePod (2nd generation), the HomePod mini, and the anticipated HomePod mini 2. This feature transforms the top surface of the speaker into a visual display screen that pulses with colors and interacts synchronously with musical rhythms.

The feature derives its colors from the Album Artwork of the currently playing audio, and is not limited to songs only, but extends to include podcasts and ambient music features from Apple. The update also introduces custom light animations for soundscapes, creating an immersive atmosphere in the room that matches the nature of the audio content.

Turning HomePod into an integrated home theater system

The update made a qualitative leap for Apple TV 4K (4th generation) users, as they can now link four HomePod speakers together to work as a single Surround Sound system. This feature requires the use of identical pairs of speakers (such as two pairs of HomePod 2nd generation or two pairs of HomePod mini 2) to distribute sound in the front and rear directions, providing a deeper and more realistic cinematic experience.

In addition, Mac users can now set HomePod speakers as the default system-wide audio output. This connection relies on a responsive and continuous AirPlay connection, ensuring audio stability and synchronization with all activities performed by the user on the computer, whether in video editing, calls, or entertainment.

Solutions for control and security issues

Apple responded to complaints from some users about accidental touches, also known as "Ghost Touch", by adding the Lock Controls option. This feature allows disabling the touch controls located on the top of the device, preventing accidental music pausing, track skipping, or volume changes, which is particularly useful in homes with children or pets.

The update also included general improvements to the Apple Music and Podcasts apps, expanded the scope of captions to include more content on tvOS, with the ability to individually block certain apps to enhance parental control and privacy.

What actually changes for users?

This update represents a shift in Apple's strategy for speakers, as they are no longer just tools for individual listening, but have become a core pillar in the integrated home entertainment system. Moving from stereo pair support (two speakers) to four speakers puts Apple in direct competition with professional audio systems. The control lock feature also addresses an old technical problem that used to plague users and sometimes led to music playing loudly at inappropriate times.

It is worth noting that the HomePod mini 2 will be released in the market on Friday, October 30, while this will be followed by the launch of the new Apple TV 4K on November 13, making update 27.2 the cornerstone for running this new ecosystem efficiently.
