Astranis Upgrades Launch Contract with SpaceX to Dedicate Full Mission to 'Block 4' Satellites

Astranis has announced an upgrade to its fourth contract with SpaceX, converting the mission scheduled for 2028 into a dedicated mission using a Falcon 9 rocket. This strategic move allows the company to transport its entire production batch of "Block 4" MicroGEO satellites in a single flight, rather than sharing the payload.

Mission Details and Technical Capabilities

The upgraded mission will include six MicroGEO satellites, which are scheduled to be placed directly into geostationary orbit (GEO) using the Impulse Helios upper stage for direct injection. This step aims to expand Astranis's ability to serve commercial and government customers around the world.

With the completion of this mission, the company's total fleet will reach 16 satellites, as this new batch joins 10 satellites previously built within the first three generations (Blocks 1, 2, and 3). This upgrade comes as an "amendment" to an initial contract signed with SpaceX in late 2024, granting Astranis full control over the payload capacity for that mission.

Why is this shift technically significant?

This trend reflects a fundamental shift in demand for space infrastructure; governments and major institutions are increasingly seeking to own dedicated space infrastructure for communications and other missions such as Space Domain Awareness.

Instead of relying on shared capacity in traditional satellites, users with high security requirements prefer to own networks they can fully control, which is ideally provided by high orbits such as geostationary orbit (GEO). Astranis confirms that securing launches for multiple satellite clusters is a core part of its business model based on rapid response to meet the growing demand for independent infrastructure.

Strategic Expansion and Growth

Astranis's ambitions are not limited to communications alone, but extend to the development of high-orbit platforms capable of maneuvering and surveillance, which is supported by its new technologies such as the Perceptor platform. The company currently manages a backlog of confirmed orders exceeding $1 billion in commercial contracts, reflecting growing confidence in its ability to build high-performance satellites for high orbits with speed and at scale.
