PERSEUS Project: New Laser Technology to Enhance Optical Communications in Space

PERSEUS Project and the Future of Space Communications

Space engineering company Craft Prospect has announced the launch of a new research project named PERSEUS (PCSEL Environmental and Radiation Sensitivity: Evaluation for Use in Space), in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics (Fraunhofer CAP) and Vector Photonics. The project aims to evaluate the potential of using an advanced laser technology known as Photonic Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers (PCSELs) in space communication applications.

What Has Changed Practically?

PCSEL technology is promising due to its ability to overcome current limitations in traditional radio and optical communication systems in space. The project seeks to:

  • Test Durability: Subjecting PCSEL technology to rigorous tests including radiation, vibration, and thermal-vacuum conditions to ensure its ability to withstand launch and on-orbit operations.
  • Technical Integration: Demonstrating the compatibility of these lasers with current spacecraft hardware to enable end-to-end data transmission.
  • Develop a Roadmap: Identifying the engineering steps necessary to transition this technology from the research and development phase to a commercial solution available for the fast-growing space markets.

Why Does This News Matter?

Optical communications in space are considered a cornerstone for the next generation of space networks, offering higher speeds and greater data transmission capacity compared to traditional radio systems. If PCSEL technology successfully passes the tests, it could pave the way for more secure and efficient communication links between satellites and ground stations, and even deep space assets.

This project is part of the Advanced Connectivity Technologies (ACT) program managed by Innovate UK with funding from the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), reflecting strategic interest in developing space communications infrastructure.

Technical Context

In this project, Craft Prospect builds upon its previous expertise in quantum and optical communication technologies, including its work on the OPS-SAT VOLT mission. By combining Vector Photonics' expertise in PCSEL laser manufacturing with Fraunhofer CAP's research and development capabilities, the team aims to bridge the gap between optical components and integrated space systems, paving the way for new innovations in the field of "smart and secure space."
