Anthropic Expands "AI for Science" Program to Global Research Institutions

Anthropic has revealed the expansion of its "AI for Science" program to include strategic partnerships with 20 research institutions and scientific organizations around the world. The program aims to empower researchers with access to advanced artificial intelligence technologies to accelerate the pace of scientific discoveries in vital fields including biology, medicine, physics, chemistry, and climate science.

What is changing practically?

Through these partnerships, participating institutions will receive free credits to use Claude models, allowing scientists to integrate artificial intelligence into their research workflows. This includes hypothesis generation, experiment design, rapid analysis of complex data, and drafting results. The initiative goes beyond individual support to include collaborative projects, such as developing the Model Hardware Standard (MHS) in collaboration with the HHMI Janelia research campus, which is a shared specification allowing AI agents to safely control laboratory equipment.

Prominent participating institutions

The list of new partners includes prestigious research and funding bodies, such as:

  • Funding institutions: Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Simons Foundation, Schmidt Sciences, and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).
  • Research institutions: Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), Wellcome Sanger Institute, Francis Crick Institute, and Imperial College London.
  • Specialized initiatives: The FlyWire project at Princeton University for brain mapping, and the LEAP initiative at Columbia University to improve climate models.

Why does this news matter?

This expansion represents a shift in how academic institutions adopt artificial intelligence; it is not limited to using off-the-shelf tools, but extends to building open-source infrastructure and shared technical standards. Anthropic emphasizes that many of these projects will yield "public goods" for the scientific community, such as open datasets, open-source software, and shared libraries, reducing the time required for manual analysis from months to hours.

This step comes as a continuation of the company's efforts that began in May 2025, as Anthropic seeks to enhance scientists' ability to address the most complex human challenges by providing advanced technical resources, with plans for further expansion in global partnerships in the future.
