Accelerated financial growth in the strategic partnership

Microsoft announced in a recent regulatory filing that its revenue resulting from commercial arrangements with OpenAI reached $10 billion during the fiscal quarter ending September 30, 2026. This figure represents about 11% of Microsoft's total quarterly revenue of $92.3 billion, which confirms the continued close financial connection between the two companies despite increasing competition between them for the same customer base.

Looking at the financial performance, the revenues associated with OpenAI during the entire 2026 fiscal year recorded about $24.1 billion. If the current pace continues, Microsoft's annual revenues from this partnership are expected to reach $40 billion.

What does this mean for financial performance?

These revenues include profit-sharing payments and cloud computing services via the Azure platform. The financial data also showed outstanding dues owed to Microsoft by OpenAI worth $7.2 billion at the end of September, compared to $6 billion at the end of June, amounts that represent obligations for previous transactions rather than additional revenues.

Although the percentages have not been officially confirmed by either party, reports indicate that OpenAI allocates 20% of its revenues to Microsoft as part of a previous investment agreement exceeding $13 billion. Under the April 2026 agreement, OpenAI is committed to continuing profit sharing until 2030, with a specified cap on these payments.

Changes in the partnership structure

The relationship between the two parties has witnessed fundamental transformations since October 2025, as Microsoft began easing exclusive partnership restrictions, granting OpenAI greater freedom to collaborate with competing cloud service providers. In return, OpenAI committed to purchasing additional Azure services worth up to $250 billion. A slight decline in Microsoft's ownership stake in OpenAI was also observed, dropping from about 25% in June to 24% in September, which is a continuation of a downward trend that began after the capital restructuring in October 2025, without Microsoft clarifying the reasons for this dilution in its stake.
