Microsoft enables direct access to Android apps via Windows 11 search bar

Microsoft has released a new preview build within the Windows Insider program, numbered 26340.9843, which allows users to directly access Android mobile apps and perform various tasks directly through the Windows 11 search bar. This update comes as part of the company's ongoing efforts to bridge the gap and enhance integration between the operating system and mobile devices, complementing previous features such as the mobile devices tab and improved clipboard synchronization.

How does the new feature work?

Under the new update, users can type the name of the app they wish to open into the Windows 11 search bar, and the app will appear in the search results accompanied by the phrase "Mobile app" displayed below the name. When clicking on the desired option, the system opens the app on the smartphone and displays it on the computer screen via the Phone Link app.

In addition to launching apps, Microsoft has also enabled the ability to perform quick actions directly from the search bar, such as making phone calls, sending text messages, and controlling phone settings like enabling "Do Not Disturb" mode by typing specific phrases in the search box. The company confirmed that support for iPhones for these features will be rolled out early next year.

What changes practically for users?

Although users were already able to run supported Android apps through the Phone Link app, the current update significantly simplifies the process. Previously, the user had to open the Phone Link app first and then select and launch the app, while the new update shortens these steps by simply typing the app name in the search bar and clicking the open option directly.

Limitations and supported devices

This new feature is not currently available to all Android users; operating requirements include the necessity of owning a supported smartphone, which is currently limited to select models from Samsung, Honor, Oppo, Asus, Vivo, Xiaomi, iQOO, and Redmi. Additionally, it requires the phone to run Android 11 or a later version, with the full list of compatible devices available on the official Microsoft support page.
