A technical analysis of Gmail app files has revealed Google's direction toward developing the "Ask Gemini" feature interface on mobile devices, aiming to bring the user experience closer to the standalone Gemini app and the web version. This development follows a series of updates to the Gmail app to integrate AI capabilities, such as the Gmail Live feature.
Design and Control Improvements
Instead of the current interface that appears as a bottom sheet, the new version will rely on a floating interface in the form of a "pill-shaped overlay." This change gives the user more screen space and provides higher flexibility, as the interface can be expanded via a built-in drag handle.
The analysis also showed the addition of new options including:
- Voice Input: Full support for voice commands with a dedicated button to stop recording.
- Additions Menu (+): Allows users quick access to Google Drive files, in addition to Gemini search settings.
- Data Source Management: Users can now specify the locations where the AI searches for information, such as Gmail, Drive, and the web, via dedicated toggle switches.
Why Does This Update Matter?
This change aims to address the functional gap between the Gemini experience on the browser and its experience within the Gmail app on mobile. By allowing the user to integrate Drive files directly into the conversation and customize the search scope, the feature transforms from a simple assistant into an integrated productivity tool capable of analyzing cross-service data across various Google services. This parity enhances the efficiency of using AI for daily tasks such as writing messages or summarizing email-related documents.
Note on Availability: Since these features were discovered through APK analysis and required manual activation in the tested version, the official release date for all users is not yet certain, as this step remains within the development and testing phase.
