Apple's financial statements revealed a qualitative leap in its investments directed towards research and development (R&D) during the 2026 fiscal year, as expenses increased by $11.22 billion to reach a total of $45.77 billion. This figure represents a 32% increase compared to $34.55 billion recorded in the 2025 fiscal year, which is equivalent to a daily expenditure of approximately $125 million to develop the company's products and technologies.
Spending growth outpaces revenue growth
Figures indicate that the pace of spending on research and development grew at a much faster rate than sales growth; while Apple achieved a 15% increase in its annual revenues, R&D expenses rose by about a third. Based on this data, the company is now allocating nearly one dollar for research and development for every ten dollars it generates in revenue.
Why this news matters
This financial expansion comes at a time when Apple's technology roadmap is witnessing fundamental shifts, as the company previously linked its growing budget to the development of artificial intelligence technologies. During the company's earnings call last April, Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh explained that artificial intelligence investments are added to the company's pre-existing product spending plans, which was also confirmed by former CEO Tim Cook on previous occasions when asked about the company's directions in this field.
Spending stability in the final quarter
Despite the significant annual increase, financial data showed stability in spending levels during the final two quarters of the fiscal year. Apple recorded research and development expenses of $11.730 billion in the quarter ending in September, a very slight increase of only one million dollars compared to $11.729 billion recorded in the results of the quarter ending in June, indicating that the pace of investment reached a stable level at the end of the year.
