Sony has begun making the Android 17 operating system update available to users of its mid-range phones, specifically the Xperia 10 VIII and Xperia 10 VII models. Although the update brings noticeable improvements to the user experience, it comes loaded with technical limitations that make the experience different from flagship phones.
New Available Features
Users of these two models will benefit from a range of aesthetic and functional updates, including:
- Interface updates: Updating the "Wallpaper & style" feature to include new designs for wallpapers and clocks, with the ability to customize icons in terms of shape and style.
- Quick Settings panel: Redesigning the Quick Settings panel, allowing for resizing and rearranging tiles, with the possibility of displaying short descriptions for large tiles.
- Improved screen recording: Users can now choose between recording the entire screen or just a specific app, with support for recording device audio and the microphone simultaneously.
Technical Limitations and a Decline in Support
Despite these improvements, Sony has set technical limits that prevent some core Android 17 features from reaching these devices. Features such as "Desktop mode," "Quick Share AirDrop" support, and the development of the "AI Camera Assistant" will remain exclusive to the Xperia 1 VIII and above.
In a striking development, Sony confirmed that the Xperia 10 VI will not receive the Android 17 update, despite previous promises. The company attributed this decision to "limitations related to the device's storage capacity," placing users of this model outside the scope of major system updates.
What Does This Mean for Users?
This uneven distribution of features reflects Sony's strategy of separating the capabilities of its flagship and mid-range devices through software. While mid-range users receive improvements in interface and productivity, features that rely on high processing capabilities or large storage spaces (such as AI and desktop mode) remain exclusive to more expensive devices. Furthermore, the exclusion of the Xperia 10 VI due to storage capacity highlights the importance of hardware specifications in determining the lifespan of software support, a crucial factor to consider when choosing sustainable devices.
