Anger among YouTube users due to app interface redesign and hiding the "Subscriptions" tab

The YouTube platform is facing a wave of sharp criticism from its users after starting to roll out a comprehensive update to the app interface on Android and iOS systems. The most controversial change is the removal of the Subscriptions tab from the bottom navigation bar, where it had remained for nearly a decade, and moving it to a swipe gesture at the top of the screen.

Radical changes in the user interface

According to Android Authority, the new design prioritizes other features in the bottom bar, where Shorts and Upload buttons have been fixed in thumb-accessible areas. This trend has also led to the removal of the category filters that users were accustomed to, such as "Unwatched," "Today," and "Live" content filters, making access to specific content more difficult and requiring extra effort.

Why is this change causing so much controversy?

User objections are not limited to the aesthetic aspect but extend to include usability and user experience (UX), for several fundamental reasons:

  • Breaking muscle memory: Users suffer from confusion resulting from automatically clicking on old locations, leading to opening unintended features such as the camera or the video upload interface instead of accessing subscriptions.
  • Changing consumption priorities: Many believe that giving prominent space to Shorts and Uploading reflects YouTube's desire to push short and algorithmically suggested content at the expense of the content the user chose to follow intentionally.
  • Loss of filtering tools: The absence of quick filters has made the content feed appear less organized and more dependent on random recommendations.

For Android users who wish to temporarily bypass this change, they can use App Shortcuts by long-pressing the app icon to directly access the Subscriptions section.
