The Future of Home Internet in Egypt: Between Proposals to Separate the Service from the Landline and Wireless Alternatives

Parliamentary Discussions on the Independence of Internet Service

The file on providing home internet without requiring ownership of a landline phone has returned to the forefront of technical discussions in Egypt, after the Communications and Information Technology Committee of the House of Representatives discussed a proposal aimed at separating internet service subscriptions from fixed-line phone service. This move aims to ease financial burdens on users who rely entirely on the internet and do not use traditional voice call services.

During the discussion session held on November 3, 2026, Engineer El-Husseiny Adel, Vice Executive President for Regional Affairs at Telecom Egypt, explained that the proposal merits in-depth technical and operational study. He noted that the challenge lies in the nature of the current infrastructure that connects the voice and data networks, in addition to the need to consider the landline customer base exceeding 14 million subscribers, the challenges of address data accuracy, and the impact of changes on network stability.

Wireless Internet: Is It the Technical Alternative?

From a technical standpoint, obtaining home internet without a landline is already available in the Egyptian market through wireless internet technologies. This service relies on routers equipped with SIM cards that receive internet signals from mobile network stations and distribute them via a Wi-Fi network inside the home.

This service is currently available through fourth-generation (4G) and fifth-generation (5G) technologies, where 5G technology provides high theoretical speeds reaching gigabit-per-second levels, making it an attractive option for areas that lack strong fiber optic infrastructure.

What Changes Practically for Users?

  • Subscription Flexibility: If the proposal is approved, users may get a more flexible subscription model that allows them to pay for data service only without incurring additional costs for an unused voice service.
  • Performance Differences: Fixed internet based on fiber continues to excel in speed stability and the ability to handle heavy and simultaneous usage. In contrast, wireless internet efficiency is affected by external factors such as distance from the mobile cell tower, signal strength inside the building, and network congestion during peak hours.
  • Usage Challenges: While wireless internet is an excellent solution for remote work and video conferencing, users who rely on competitive online gaming may face challenges related to latency compared to fixed wired connections.

Experts emphasize that expanding these solutions requires continuous investments in developing mobile stations and increasing their capacity to ensure the delivery of a competitive service that serves areas suffering from a shortage in digital infrastructure, along with the need to provide data packages suited for home consumption patterns.
