Five British startups win eight patents from global tech giants

Five startups in the United Kingdom have successfully won the rights to use patents developed by some of the world's largest companies, in a move aimed at enhancing their local and international competitiveness through the fourth edition of the IPHatch UK competition.

The five winning companies were selected from twenty-one finalists that reached the pitch stage held at the City of Glasgow College, securing a total of eight patents belonging to Panasonic, Nokia, NEC, and DENSO—technologies that are usually out of reach for startups and small businesses.

Winning companies and the patents they acquired

The list of startups that acquired patents covered diverse specializations including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and educational technology:

  • CALMS International: An enterprise software company based in the West Midlands, which secured a patent from NEC.
  • Cyber Nandhini: A cybersecurity specialist from Aberdeen, which secured a patent from Nokia.
  • The Discourse AI: A company operating in educational technology and artificial intelligence in Suffolk, which won two patents from Panasonic.
  • Mixd Reality: A company specializing in augmented reality and educational technology from Staffordshire, which secured a patent from Panasonic.
  • RS9 Technologies: A company specializing in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence from the West Midlands, which secured three patents from DENSO.

Why this news matters and what changes practically

With the rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence technologies and the decreasing cost of software building, startups face growing challenges in maintaining a competitive advantage based solely on developing internal technology from scratch. Relying on pre-registered and granted patents from major global companies allows startups to shorten the time, effort, and cost of research and development, in addition to strengthening their legal and commercial standing.

On the other hand, this model allows multinational companies to benefit from valuable and underutilized patents by making them available to ambitious companies instead of leaving them frozen within their strategic portfolios.

In addition to intellectual property rights, the winners gain a direct relationship with the tech giant owners, opening the door to potential future partnerships, investments, and expansion into international markets, according to the organizers of the initiative managed by Piece Future, which has commercialized over 350 patents across 14 global competitions.
