A few weeks after the launch of the iPhone Duo, developers have continued to introduce innovative ideas and applications that exploit the unique design, dual screens, and foldable structure of this new edition. The latest wave included a diverse package of games, productivity tools, and camera applications attempting to reshape the traditional user experience.
Interactive games leveraging folding movements
The gaming category focuses primarily on direct interaction with the hinge movement and multiple screens. Among them is the maze game (Marbles Unhinged), where the screen floor turns into a slope when the phone is folded, and the miniature golf game (Greens), where the upper half serves as a camera for the assistant, in addition to rhythm and tactical games like (PianoFold) and (Load Bearing) which distribute control elements and gameplay screens between the upper and lower parts.
Productivity apps and tools with innovative concepts
Developers introduced apps mimicking traditional devices such as the typewriter in (Post Club) and (Halfpage), where half of the phone turns into a keyboard and the other half into a writing page. The list also included tools allowing the display of presence status such as the (Callsign) app, and applications turning the device into a virtual aquarium (Duo Aquarium) or an interactive music box (Lullabox) that interacts with the phone's opening angle.
Camera experiences and browser improvements
Camera apps like (VNTG) took advantage of the folding feature to provide an experience mimicking instant cameras, where closing the phone is required to take the picture and then opening it to develop it. On the browser tools front, Safari browser extensions such as (Brim) and (Widen) emerged to expand website viewing ranges and exploit the blank spaces appearing on the external screen of the iPhone Duo.
What changes practically for users?
These applications confirm developers' attempts to move beyond simple compatibility to exploiting the physical dimensions of foldable screens, although the biggest challenge still lies in the extent of user acceptance to adopt these specialized tools compared to traditional daily apps.
