Bee, a startup specializing in AI note-taking devices, has announced two new devices, Frontier and Eclipse, in its first major launch since Amazon acquired it more than a year ago. The launch comes alongside a Bee Pro subscription, app updates, and integrations with the Alexa+ and Amazon.com ecosystems.
Frontier Replaces Pioneer
Bee Frontier succeeds the company’s previous Pioneer device. It is a small unit that can be mounted inside a wristband or clip for wearing on clothing or attaching to a bag. The device includes a button for starting a note-taking session or summoning the Buzz AI assistant, as well as a light indicator showing states such as listening or charging.
Frontier costs about $75. It is smaller and lighter than the previous generation and is available in Onyx, Lavender, and Sage. It also has an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, whereas Pioneer was not water-resistant. The device retains an estimated battery life of up to seven days, a USB-C charging port, and two microphones with noise filtering.
Pressing the button starts a recording session during which Bee listens to its surroundings and then provides transcripts and summaries of conversations. Pressing and holding the button lets users ask the assistant a question or record a voice memo. The company has stopped selling Pioneer, while the article notes that evaluating the effectiveness of its water resistance and noise isolation requires independent testing.
Eclipse Connects Magnetically to a Phone
Bee Eclipse represents a new category for the company: a rectangular device that attaches magnetically to a phone and includes three microphones, a button, and a light indicator. Bee says its battery lasts more than 21 days, approximately three times the stated duration for Frontier.
Eclipse performs the same core functions, including starting recordings, summarizing discussions, and attempting to identify speakers or the content of speech. It is set to launch at a price of $100 in Silver, Midnight, Honey, and Blush, but Amazon said it would become available soon without specifying a date.
What Changes for Users in Practice?
Bee is introducing the new devices into a crowded market that includes products such as Pocket, Plaud, Comu, Innaio, Ruune, and Raycon. The most important practical issue remains how clearly recording is indicated. Eclipse’s design and size resemble those of a portable battery charger, which may lead some people to interpret the indicator light as a charging signal rather than a recording signal.
Bee says audio is not stored and cannot be accessed or shared, and that users are asked to obtain participants’ consent when each recording begins. According to the company’s description of the Private Compute environment, audio is processed into insights in real time and then deleted, while transcripts are encrypted with keys generated by the device and controlled by the user, with the option to delete transcripts and summaries.
Bee Pro Subscription and Amazon Integrations
Bee Pro costs about $11.99 per month. It adds unlimited summaries of recent conversations, suggested tasks, daily memories, conversation templates, and a desktop app for Mac and Windows with additional transcription capabilities. New customers receive a 30-day free trial, while the company’s founder, Maria Zollo, said early customers would retain the current feature set for free permanently.
The updates include connecting Bee to an Amazon account and Alexa+. The app can suggest products mentioned in conversations and add them to shopping lists, while users can request summaries, tasks, or book recommendations through Alexa devices. Amazon says these functions are optional and require user consent, and that Alexa devices will use voice recognition to verify the identity of the person making the request before displaying information.
The launch represents a clear expansion of AI-powered note-taking devices, but it does not eliminate open questions about transcription accuracy, the effectiveness of noise isolation, and the clarity of consent from people nearby. Moving essential functions to Bee Pro also makes the actual cost of use higher than the price of the device alone.
