Turkey allocates nearly 100 billion liras to support the space and aviation sector over 3 years

Documents of the 2027 Turkish Central Government Budget Proposal revealed an ambitious plan to boost the space and aviation sector, with approximately 100 billion Turkish liras expected to be allocated to support this sector over the next three years. These investments aim to raise Turkey's global competitiveness in the fields of space technology and the development of air transportation services.

Investment Distribution and Strategic Objectives

Financial data indicates a qualitative leap in the funding allocated for this program; after this year's allocation was about 8..7 billion liras, it is planned to be raised to 24.5 billion liras in 2027, an increase of 181.7%. The pace of support continues to escalate to reach 30.6 billion liras in 2028, and 36.9 billion liras in 2029, bringing the total allocations to more than 92 billion liras.

These resources are distributed across two main tracks:

  • Aviation Sector: Focusing on the construction and operation of air transport facilities, with the target of raising the total number of passengers through Turkish airports to 291 million passengers by 2029.
  • Space Sector: Supporting research and development (R&D) activities to enhance local capabilities in space technology production, developing high value-added technologies, and strengthening testing and verification infrastructure.

Upcoming Space Projects

This budget comes at a time when Turkey continues to implement strategic projects, most notably the "Türksat 7A" new generation satellite program, and ongoing preparations for the lunar mission (Ay Araştırma Programı). The "TÜBİTAK UZAY" institution has completed the manufacturing and assembly operations for the spacecraft dedicated to this mission, which features a local manufacturing rate exceeding 80%, and it is currently undergoing environmental testing in preparation for its targeted launch in 2027.

Why This News Matters

This financial allocation represents a strategic shift towards the "localization" of space technology in Turkey. Instead of relying on imports, the government aims through this budget to transform scientific research into commercial products ready for export. Furthermore, the focus on the "Hybrid Propulsion System" and deep space experiments indicates Turkey's desire to secure a seat among countries capable of executing complex and technically independent space missions.
