Radical Changes to the User Interface
YouTube has begun rolling out extensive updates to its app on Android and iOS, aimed at improving the browsing experience by redesigning the top bar and adding custom tabs. The most prominent of these changes is the removal of the "Subscriptions" tab from its fixed position in the bottom bar, where it had remained for over a decade since 2017, and moving it to the top bar next to the "Home" tab.
This adjustment comes as part of a broader strategy to simplify navigation within the app, as the side navigation menu will be replaced with top tabs dedicated to Live content, Music, and Movies & TV, with the latter appearing only for users who have active subscriptions to specific channels.
Launch of the "Custom Feeds" Feature
Concurrently with the restructuring, YouTube has launched the "Custom Feeds" feature, which allows users to create content feeds based on their specific interests. Users can tap the "+" icon at the top of the "Home" page and describe the type of content or topics they wish to see, and the system will generate a custom feed that matches their request.
What Changes Practically for Users?
- Re-learning: Users will need to adapt to the changed locations of familiar buttons, as the Subscriptions tab will now appear in the second position after "Home" with a red underline for distinction.
- Usage Limits: The storage capacity for Custom Feeds varies based on account type; regular users can save up to 3 active feeds, while YouTube Premium subscriptions allow for saving up to 8 feeds.
- Geographic Availability: The feature is currently available to registered users in the United States in English only, with plans to expand to other countries in the future.
This move is an attempt by YouTube to integrate generative AI capabilities into the content discovery experience, giving users greater control over what appears before them instead of relying entirely on the platform's traditional algorithms.
