Organizers of JIMTOF 2026 (The Japan International Machine Tool Fair) have announced the strategic direction for the upcoming edition, which will focus heavily on integrating artificial intelligence technologies into manufacturing processes and industrial automation. The exhibition is scheduled to be held in Tokyo from October 26 to 31, 2026.
The exhibition aims to showcase the radical transformation in the industrial sector, from traditional automation based on fixed programming to what is known as "Physical AI". This concept focuses on developing intelligent systems capable of interacting effectively with the physical environment of factories, allowing machines to make real-time decisions based on data derived from their surroundings.
Developing CNC Control Systems via Artificial Intelligence
One of the key technical themes at the exhibition will be the integration of artificial intelligence into Computer Numerical Control (CNC) systems. This development aims to enable machines to optimize tool paths and reduce human error, thereby increasing the precision of complex manufacturing processes. Virtual simulation technologies, such as the NC Virtual Simulator, will also be highlighted, allowing engineers to test manufacturing processes in a completely safe digital environment before applying them to actual machines, which reduces the risk of damage and saves costs.
Towards Autonomous Operation: The DMG MORI Model
As part of the "Ever-next" strategy, technologies such as the GX-Auto Pilot developed by DMG MORI stand out as a model for autonomous operation. This technology aims to enable machines to operate largely independently, reducing the need for constant human intervention and helping to address challenges associated with the shortage of skilled labor in the global manufacturing sector.
Why does this trend matter?
This technical shift represents a direct response to several challenges facing modern industry, most notably:
- Addressing labor shortages: By automating tasks that require high technical skills and are difficult to learn.
- Increasing production efficiency: Through the use of artificial intelligence to optimize processes and reduce waste in materials and time.
- Manufacturing flexibility: The ability to adapt quickly to production line changes without the need for comprehensive and complex reprogramming.
JIMTOF 2026 will serve as a vital platform to see how factories will transform from mere automated production lines into integrated, intelligent environments driven by Physical AI algorithms.
