"Waymo" expands its autonomous vehicle coverage by 250 square miles in 5 US cities

"Waymo" continues to strengthen its leadership in the autonomous vehicle sector by adding about 250 new square miles to the coverage areas of its driverless robotaxi service, distributed across five major US cities including Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Details of the expansion by city

The new geographic update includes tangible expansions in the company's operational scope as follows:

  • Los Angeles: The service extended south toward the "South Bay" area, to include Manhattan and Redondo beaches and the city of Torrance.
  • San Francisco and its Bay: Coverage deepened in the "South Bay" area to connect with the "BART" train station in Berryessa, San Jose, linking to a route extending from San Francisco across the Peninsula all the way to San Jose and Campbell.
  • San Diego: The service expanded north to reach the "La Jolla" area, extending across University City and Clairemont.
  • Orlando: The covered area on the east side nearly doubled with the expansion of the scope in downtown.
  • Nashville: The service area pushed southward to cover new landmarks including the zoo.

Operational gap and service scope expansion

This step comes to consolidate Waymo's operational position, as the company currently operates its services in 15 urban areas within the United States, executing more than 500,000 paid trips weekly. The company had exceeded its total coverage area of 1,400 square miles last May, and has also begun mapping the Canadian city of Toronto in preparation for launching the service there by 2028.

On the operational comparison front, Waymo recorded about 3.9 million miles traveled by its cars completely without a driver weekly during the second quarter of 2026, while recorded data for Tesla's autonomous fleet showed reaching 558,000 miles weekly, most of which are concentrated in Austin, despite the latter expanding its scope in Houston to reach 254 square miles with a limited fleet.

Why does this expansion matter?

This rapid expansion reflects Waymo's ability to transition autonomous driving technologies from the stage of limited testing to daily commercial services fully integrated with public transportation networks (such as BART trains). It also highlights the acceleration in connecting major regions relying on operationally complete sensor and artificial intelligence systems, which establishes a record gap between it and its competitors in the volume of actual usage and miles traveled without a driver in the driver's seat.
