Xreal has officially begun selling its new Aura smart glasses, a milestone in the Extended Reality (XR) sector as it is the first device of its kind to adopt the Android XR platform developed by Google in collaboration with Samsung. These glasses, first unveiled at Google I/O, offer a comprehensive spatial computing experience powered by robust hardware and AI-supported software.
Technical Specifications and Performance
The Xreal Aura glasses are powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite chip, a processor dedicated to delivering high performance in virtual and augmented reality environments. The glasses feature Micro-OLED displays providing a resolution of up to 1200p with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 70-degree field of view, ensuring a smooth and clear visual experience. To enhance the audio experience, the company collaborated with Bose to tune the built-in open-ear speakers.
In terms of design, Xreal focused on lightweight construction, with the glasses weighing less than 95 grams, making them similar in form to traditional eyewear. To achieve this light weight, the company utilized a separate external computing and battery unit (Puck) that connects to the glasses via a cable. This unit includes a built-in trackpad and a fingerprint sensor for easier control and security.
Operating System and AI Integration
The Android XR system is the primary engine for these glasses, providing direct access to over 150 dedicated XR experiences at launch, in addition to full support for traditional Google Play Store applications. Google's Gemini AI assistant is deeply integrated into the operating system, allowing users to perform tasks via voice commands and generative AI in a spatial environment.
Regarding gaming, Xreal collaborated with GameSir to develop a dedicated controller for the Aura glasses, featuring a specific button to instantly summon Gemini during gameplay. The glasses support prominent titles such as Cubism and the VR version of Fallout: Factions. They also allow for the connection of laptops or handheld gaming consoles via a USB-C port to display content in a spatial workspace alongside built-in applications.
What Actually Changes in the XR Market?
The launch of Xreal Aura represents a shift from closed systems to a more open ecosystem led by Google. Instead of manufacturers relying on modified versions of Android, Android XR provides standardized benchmarks for developers, which may accelerate the availability of high-quality apps and games. Furthermore, the trend toward separating the processing unit and battery from the glasses frame reflects a strategy aimed at making wearables more comfortable for long-term use, which has been the biggest challenge facing heavier mixed-reality headsets.
Availability and Pricing
The glasses are currently available at discounted launch prices until the end of 2026. The 12GB RAM/256GB storage model is priced at approximately $1,099 (down from $1,279), while the 16GB RAM/512GB storage model is priced at $1,299 (down from $1,499). Devices are expected to begin shipping to buyers in mid-November.
