The Information and Decision Support Center of the Egyptian Cabinet revealed a set of international indicators outlining the features of the global digital economy for 2026. The data shows accelerated growth in the use of digital platforms and AI tools, with a noticeable concentration of economic power in the hands of a limited number of large companies, and a gradual shift toward intangible assets.
Economic Dominance of Social Media Platforms
The number of social media users has surpassed the 5.7 billion users mark, representing about 70% of the world's population, with expectations that this number will reach 6 billion by the end of 2028. These platforms are no longer just communication tools; they have transformed into massive economic engines relying on digital advertising.
According to the Resourcera platform classification, Facebook topped the global revenue list for 2026 with a value of $164.4 billion, followed by Instagram with $66.9 billion, then YouTube with $54.2 billion. TikTok also recorded revenues of $23.6 billion, while Snapchat achieved approximately $5.3 billion.
Artificial Intelligence: American Superiority and ChatGPT Acquisition
In the artificial intelligence sector, Visual Capitalist data for June 2026 showed clear American dominance, as the United States controls 12 out of the 15 most visited tools globally. ChatGPT emerged as the absolute market leader, capturing approximately 53% of the total website traffic for the top 15 AI tools, recording 5.3 billion visits.
The competition in the following ranks was as follows:
- Gemini: 1.1 billion visits.
- Claude: 968 million visits.
- Canva: 760 million visits.
- Google Translate: 343 million visits.
Brand Value and Digital Services
The Trade in Services 100 classification issued by Brand Finance showed that the total value of brands associated with cross-border services trade reached $4.6 trillion in 2026. Microsoft topped the list as the most valuable brand in services trade at $565.3 billion, followed by Google at $433.1 billion, then Amazon at $369.9 billion.
On a regional level, TikTok/Douyin emerged as the most valuable Chinese brand in this classification, with a value of $153.5 billion.
What Does This Shift Mean for the Future?
These indicators reflect three fundamental shifts in the structure of the global economy:
First, the platform economy has become a fundamental pillar that relies on data and digital content to achieve massive returns. Second, there is extreme concentration in technology and artificial intelligence markets around a limited number of major players. Third, the importance of intangible assets and digital services has increased as a key element in international trade, which requires emerging economies to strengthen their capabilities in exporting software and technological services to ensure competitiveness.
