Nadia Abdullah, Network Strategy and Engineering Director at Vodafone Group, confirmed that the future of telecommunications networks is moving toward an advanced phase that goes beyond connecting traditional devices to connecting smart systems capable of exchanging and processing information in real time, supported by the expansion of cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence.
In an interview published by the group, she explained that its strategy focuses on the integration of fiber optic networks, mobile communications, edge computing, and satellites. This transformation is supported by key technologies including 5G Standalone networks, Open RAN (Open Radio Access Network), alongside laying the foundations for AI-supported Radio Access Networks (AI-RAN).
What is changing practically in the infrastructure?
Vodafone seeks to transition networks from mere data transmission channels into systems capable of flexible decision-making. While standalone 5G networks provide the ability to slice the network and expand its capacity, Open RAN networks provide a foundation for integrating smart algorithms to improve operational efficiency, network performance, and manage power consumption.
The group is also working on developing self-operating networks capable of understanding operational conditions and anticipating changes based on traffic data and major events, allowing capacity and network performance to be adjusted before any actual surge in customer demand occurs.
The shift toward predictive and proactive operations
The Network Strategy Director emphasized that the increasing complexity of infrastructure and rising cybersecurity threats necessitate a shift from delayed response to failures to a proactive operational model.
- Detecting risks and resolving issues before the customer experiences them.
- Relying on advanced monitoring tools and predictive operations.
- Building networks capable of continuous learning and making reliable decisions in real time.
Through these efforts, Vodafone aims to achieve a connectivity experience where network complexity is imperceptible to the end user, with services continuously adapting to the needs of individuals and businesses in an ever-evolving digital environment.
