Google announced the launch of a package of substantial updates to the Gemini app, aiming to improve the visual user experience and enhance productivity capabilities by integrating file creation tools directly into the chat environment. These updates include the rollout of the new design to all Android devices, in addition to advanced features for processing documents and data.
Visual Updates and a Smoother User Experience
Google has begun rolling out the new Gemini interface design (Overlay design) to include all Android devices, after it was initially limited to Pixel 11 phones equipped with Gemini Intelligence technologies. The new design features a heavy blur effect over the command bar, with the addition of visual elements including swirls and colored dots that give the interface a vibrant appearance. Additionally, the "capsule"-shaped bar has transformed from a solid shape to a transparent shape at the edges, providing a more integrated visual experience with the wallpaper.
Transforming Gemini into an Integrated Productivity Engine
The most prominent functional update represents the ability for users to "create, preview, and edit files" directly within conversations. This feature allows for the conversion of text commands into tangible outputs without the need to leave the Gemini interface, and includes:
- Presentations (Slides): Users can request the creation of detailed outlines or full content for presentations, preview the formatting within the chat, with the possibility of requesting changes to the tone or structure, and then export the file to Google Slides or download it in PPTX or PDF format.
- Spreadsheets and Data (Sheets): The app supports the creation of organized spreadsheets, task trackers, and complex data models, with the ability to open them directly in Google Sheets.
- Documents and Text Files: PDF, Google Docs, LaTeX, Markdown, and TXT files can be drafted, with the ability to make manual edits or via text commands directly within the chat interface, and then upload them to Google Drive.
Availability and Technical Limitations
Google clarified that file creation and editing features are available to users in all languages supported in the Gemini app. However, there is a distinction between platforms; while PDF file preview and editing features are available on both the gemini.google.com website and mobile applications, the features for creating Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Markdown, TXT, and Code files remain restricted to the web version only.
What Changes in Practice?
This update moves Gemini from being just a "chat assistant" to a "Productivity Agent." By reducing friction between the thinking stage (chatting) and the execution stage (file creation), Google provides users with a more efficient workflow. Instead of copying text from the chat and pasting it into external documents, users can now request a draft, then edit it, and then export it in one continuous cycle, enhancing the value of artificial intelligence in work and educational environments.
