Data from Turkey's 2027 Annual Presidential Program revealed a qualitative leap in telecommunications infrastructure, as the total length of fiber optic networks in the country increased by 12.9% within one year, reaching 720,012 kilometers by the second quarter of 2026.
Intensive Infrastructure Investments
This growth is the result of massive investments implemented by telecommunications operators, who added 82,000 kilometers of fiber lines in just 12 months. This step comes within the framework of strengthening infrastructure-based competition, as the number of licensed operators in this sector reached 206 by June 2026.
What does this development mean for users?
The report indicates a tangible shift in consumer behavior and technical preferences, as the share of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) internet services in the fixed broadband market decreased from 46.4% to 37.8% within one year, reflecting the users' trend toward faster and more reliable connection technologies. Meanwhile, the share of cable internet stabilized at 7.1%.
Expansion of 5G Services
Turkey has seen a rapid expansion in 5G services, which launched in 81 provinces on April 1, 2026. By June of the same year, the number of active 5G subscribers reached approximately 44.3 million, out of a total of 87 million mobile telecommunications subscribers. The total number of broadband subscribers in the country also rose to 100.8 million, an annual increase of 3.5%.
Innovation and Research and Development
The figures confirm the role of the information and communications technology sector as a fundamental pillar of the Turkish economy, as it contributes directly to the Gross Domestic Product. Approximately 60% of companies located in technology development zones and 22% of Research and Development (R&D) centers are active in this sector, which enhances the country's capacity for technical innovation and increases productivity across various economic sectors.
