Mazda Adopts Used Battery Energy Storage Systems to Support Carbon Neutrality Goals

Mazda has unveiled a new strategic move aimed at enhancing the sustainability of its manufacturing operations by integrating energy storage systems using used electric vehicle batteries. This initiative is part of the company's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality across all its factories by 2035.

Renewable Energy Strategy

Mazda relies on a multi-path approach to achieve its environmental goals, targeting a 46% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, leading to full neutrality by 2035. To achieve this, the company has begun installing energy storage systems based on batteries recovered from electric vehicles, giving these batteries a second life cycle instead of disposing of them.

Project Details and Technical Cooperation

The company announced Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) at its sites in Japan, specifically at the Mazda KD Center and other factories. Energy storage systems are being installed in cooperation with technical partners, with storage capacity at the KD Center reaching 2.2 megawatts, with an annual discharge capacity of 2.6 gigawatt-hours. The plan also includes other sites with storage capacity reaching 0.8 megawatts.

Why This News Matters

The importance of this trend lies in it being a practical model for the circular economy in the automotive sector. Instead of treating electric vehicle batteries as waste after their lifespan in the vehicle ends, they are repurposed in energy infrastructure within factories. This not only reduces the carbon footprint of manufacturing operations but also provides a sustainable technical solution for managing intermittent renewable energy, contributing to the stability of the electrical grid within industrial facilities.

Mazda expects these initiatives to contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1,300 tons annually, enhancing resource efficiency in its journey toward a green transition.
