Leaks Reveal Apple's Readiness to Transform HomeView Smart Display into a Home Security Camera

Software leaks spotted in the beta version of HomeView Software 27.2 have revealed Apple's intention to fully support home security camera features in its upcoming Apple HomeView smart display. The leaked software data indicates that the display, equipped with a 12-megapixel camera featuring Center Stage technology, will integrate HomeKit Secure Video technologies and transform into an indoor home monitoring unit.

Operating Modes and Strict Privacy Controls

According to the discovered text, the system includes four main operating modes to control the camera, including:

  • Off: Completely disabling the camera from monitoring or streaming.
  • Detect Activity: Sensing motion and activities without sending a continuous live stream.
  • Stream: Displaying live video to authorized users.
  • Stream & Allow Recording: Recording alerts and events and storing them in the cloud.

The system also supports three modes based on the presence of family members: At Home, Away, and Sleep. To ensure privacy protection within personal spaces, Apple has integrated a green indicator light that appears on the screen, along with an audible alert that sounds as soon as live streaming or recording begins, in addition to sending instant notifications to all household members when security settings are modified.

Comparing the Ecosystems of Apple and Google

This move highlights the difference in strategies between Apple and Google in the smart home display market. Google previously launched the Pixel Tablet with a desktop charging dock to market it as an interactive home display, but it did not integrate Nest Cam remote monitoring functions into it. Although Google's Nest Hub Max offers monitoring features via a paid Nest Aware subscription, Apple's solution relies on local data processing and end-to-end encryption, utilizing storage capacities available in existing iCloud Plus subscriptions without imposing a separate security subscription.

What Changes Practically for Users?

Transforming stationary displays that are always on charging docks into security monitoring devices provides a practical benefit for maintenance and operation, as it eliminates the need for users to purchase independent indoor security cameras for kitchens or living rooms. As the launch date of the smart display approaches, these software updates give Apple's ecosystem a comprehensive practical advantage in managing and protecting smart homes.
